Walter A. Dods, Jr. may have saved his own life when he and wife, Diane, established the Walter and Diane Dods Scholarship Fund at the University of Hawai‘i. Years later he would have a heart attack in which the attending physician would be a recipient of his scholarship. The physician's words, "I went to the University of Hawai‘i and I went to medical school on your scholarship. You're not going to die on my watch" were gratitude enough for Dods.
