Avis Morigawara Scholarship Fund for Japanese Studies
Avis Morigawara served the University of Hawaiʻi for more than
thirty-one years, beginning in the Admissions Office at Kapiʻolani Community College and moving to the Mānoa Chancellor’s Office. For the last 11 years, she was the assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
In her years with the University, Avis worked with and touched the lives of innumerable students, faculty, and staff. She was always the go-to person who knew who to contact for whatever job that needed to be done, who could tell you the appropriate procedure or policy for almost anything. She spent countless hours assisting students, faculty, staff, and community members in navigating the complex rules and regulations of the University. She was the heart and soul of Academic Affairs.
A woman of boundless energy, Avis was an active member of the “5:00 AM Exercise Group” that met regularly in the Stan Sheriff Center Weight Room, always starting her day with a rigorous workout.
Avis was a proud alumna of UH Mānoa having earned both her BA and MA in Asian Studies, and a Graduate Certificate in Japanese Studies, while working full-time in the Vice Chancellor’s Office. A scholarship fund has been established in her name to support undergraduate students focusing on Japanese studies at UHM.
Gifts in Avis’s honor may be made to the UH Foundation to benefit the Avis Morigawara Scholarship Fund for Japanese Studies.
