Chancellor Don Straney and UH Hilo hosted the 2011 scholarship banquet to unite student scholarship recipients with the donors who are helping make their academic success possible.

The event was particularly meaningful for student recipients facing a decline in federal education funding. UH Hilo has the highest percentage of students receiving aid within the ten campus system. Thanks to private support many promising UH Hilo students are receiving the critical support they need to access a quality higher education.

During the program scholarship donor Gladys Sonomura, shared her thoughts about UH Hilo's place within the community, "A long time ago, I began to embrace the idea that the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo could become Hilo's primary economy, its industry as a college town..." By partnering with visionary donors, UH Hilo is on its way.

Mahalo to all our donors!
