Ho‘omau - For the children

Eddie & Myrna Kamae Endowment

  • Eddie & Myrna Kamae

Eddie and Myrna Kamae committed their lives to sharing the stories and music of the elders so that traditional knowledge could be passed down from one generation to the next. They instinctively knew how important it was to document the elders of their time before their stories, music, and wisdom faded away. Together, they created fifteen albums of genre-defining Hawaiian music, ten award-winning documentaries, curricula for K-12 learners, an online songbook, and a vast collection of videos, audio recordings, papers, and photographs. This Kamae archive of music, audio, film, video, and various print and photographic materials is cared for by UH West Oʻahu’s ‘Ulu‘ulu: The Henry Ku‘ualoha Giugni Moving Image Archive of Hawai‘i and the James & Abigail Campbell Library.

The Eddie & Myrna Kamae Endowment is focused on ensuring this body of work, the Kamae Archive, is widely accessible and visible so it can continue to touch the hearts, minds, and spirits of all who engage with it. For Eddie and Myrna, this is how the work lives on. Eddie once said, “We want to leave the most precious legacies.”

The endowment has these key initiatives to support the maintenance, preservation, accessibility, promotion, community and educational outreach of the Kamae Archive:

  • Kamae Archive E Hoʻomau Undergraduate Internship ($12,000)
Internship for undergraduate students to gain exposure and skills working on Kamae archive development and outreach projects with ʻUluʻulu: The Henry Kuʻualoha Giugni Moving Image Archive and The James & Abigail Campbell Library, the Kamae Archive caretakers. We aim for two internships each academic year, 300 hours each at $20 an hour, for an annual cost of $12,000.
  • Kamae Archive E Hoʻomau Graduate Internship ($7,200)
Provides graduate students with the opportunity to work with the Kamae Archive to supplement their training to become librarians, archivists, or teachers. Funding supports hosting an intern for one semester in an academic year, 15 hours/16 weeks at $30/hour for an annual cost of $7,200.
  • Kamae Student Engagement Research Fellowship ($6,000)
A merit-based scholarship that encourages undergraduate and graduate students to utilize the Kamae Archive for their academic/career pathway and passion. We aim to award four scholarships each academic year for $1,500 for a total annual cost of $6,000.
  • Kamae Faculty Engagement Grant ($5,000)
A faculty grant that provides funding for faculty in any discipline to utilize the Kamae Archive for a research, teaching, or community engagement project. The grants will be $5,000 each. We aim to award one grant each academic year for a total annual cost of $5,000.
  • Kamae Archive Professional Development ($9,800)
Provide professional development for the Kamae Archive staff to continue learning and sharing information with professional and community networks, $4,000 annually. Keep the Eddie Kamae Songbook website live and up-to-date, $3,800 annually. Provide music and archival consultant support to help library and archival staff care for the Kamae Archive, $2,000 annually.
