CNS Learning Emporium Fund
The CNS Learning Emporium at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa is a vital academic resource for students in the College of Natural Sciences. Since 2011, it has supported undergraduates in their early STEM coursework — a time when many face their greatest academic challenges.
The Emporium offers a collaborative, student-centered space where learners in chemistry, mathematics, physics, and computer science deepen their understanding through tutoring, peer support, and faculty engagement. Students describe it as a place where they gain clarity, build confidence, and stay connected to their academic goals.
These future doctors, educators, engineers, and researchers are preparing to heal our loved ones, educate our children, design our communities and technologies, and unlock the mysteries of life in these islands.
In surveys, more than 70% of students said their grades would have been lower without the Emporium. Many describe it as essential to their success.
“The Learning Emporium is one of the best resources on campus. I can honestly say it’s wholly responsible for my success at the university.”
“Without the Emporium, I would never have passed Calculus II or my first semester of O-Chem lab.”
Honoring a legacy of learning
The Yook Lun Hee and Lai Hung Hee CNS Learning Emporium Fund honors a family whose belief in education continues to shape the lives of students today.
Yook Lun Hee immigrated to Honolulu from southern China as a teenager, working in family-run businesses before opening his own gift shop and later joining a car dealership. He met Lai Hung Yu while visiting China, and together they made their home in Honolulu, raising three children.
Lai Hung returned to work as a seamstress when their youngest child began school. The couple instilled in their children the importance of studying hard — all three graduated from the University of Hawai‘i, a source of great pride.
Their legacy lives through the Learning Emporium, which helps students succeed in foundational STEM courses and pursue meaningful careers.
