For over a decade, Robert Silva has helped steer the Hawai‘i High School Auto Academy at Honolulu Community College, mentoring aspiring technicians and opening doors to automotive careers. Now in its 20th year, the program is evolving – and expanding – to meet the realities of a changing industry.

“Today’s vehicles are rolling computers,” said Silva, Assistant Professor, TECHI Automotive Technology. “We’re preparing students to think like diagnosticians – reading data, understanding complex systems and documenting their work to industry standards. It’s no longer just about turning wrenches; it’s about mastering the technology that drives modern transportation.”

Thanks to the continued support of the First Hawaiian Bank Foundation, this unique six-week program blends hands-on experience with academic learning. Mornings are spent in college-level classes at Honolulu CC, earning credits toward an associate of applied science degree in Automotive Technology. In the afternoon, they are in the 50,000-square-foot shop, taking precise measurements, hoisting cars and turning lessons into real-world skill.

Cameron Nekota“We’re grateful for our long-standing partnership with Honolulu Community College and our local dealerships in supporting and empowering Hawai‘i’s youth,” said Cameron Nekota, President, First Hawaiian Bank Foundation. “Reinvesting in our communities is at the heart of what we do, and we’re proud to support meaningful programs like the Hawai‘i High School Auto Academy that make a real difference.”

This past summer, 13 students representing five public high schools, Hālau Kū Māna Public Charter School, Kalani, Kapolei, Radford and Moanalua, successfully completed the program. Two have already enrolled in Honolulu CC’s Automotive Technology program this fall, in addition to another two students who, as juniors, participated in last year’s academy. The others are either heading to college or finishing their senior year.

Certified by the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation since 1993, the college’s Automotive Technology program is among the most respected in the state.

This year, with support from the Honolulu Auto Dealerships Association, students were able to tour multiple dealerships, including Velocity, Tony Group in Mililani and New City Nissan. The result is broader exposure and deeper engagement, which Silva sees as an opportunity.

“Most students show up thinking it’s all about ‘vroom vroom’ and fast cars,” Silva joked. “But they soon realize the real challenge is diagnosing electrical issues, writing up service reports, and understanding the technical aspects and customer expectations of automotive repair.”
