A student in the Music and Entertainment Learning Experience (MELE) program at Honolulu Community College, Esther Kang is transitioning from a career as a Ladies European Tour professional golfer to one that will allow her to pursue her passion for music. The MELE program’s unique focus on the music business, combined with a supportive and tight-knit campus community, has made this an ideal environment for Esther to grow both creatively and professionally.

Esther is the recipient of the Honolulu Metallica Scholars Scholarship. This is an excerpt from her letter to donors.

To my donors

Receiving this scholarship has been deeply meaningful. It has not only eased financial burdens but also reminded me that I’m not alone – that there are people who believe in me and my future. Your support has allowed me to focus more fully on my studies and creative projects, including an original composition and animated music video I’m producing this semester.

Outside of class, I spend much of my time writing songs, producing demos and performing with fellow students. I’m part of a student DJ duo, and I also work at a local nonprofit focused on civic engagement within the Korean American community. These experiences – blending music, service and cultural connection – have shaped not only my academic journey but also my sense of purpose.

My dream is to work in the music industry as a business professional, helping independent artists thrive and protect their creative rights. Inspired by my nonprofit work, I’m also exploring the possibility of studying law in the future to better serve artists and my community. One of the most powerful lessons I’ve learned is that “your past doesn’t define your future,” and it has given me the courage to chase dreams I never thought were possible.

During my time at HCC, I aspire to earn my degree while building meaningful relationships, collaborating with fellow creatives, and preparing for a successful transfer to a four-year university.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Your generosity has made a real and lasting difference in my life, and I carry that encouragement with me every day. I hope to one day pay it forward and support others the way you have supported me.
