The Helmsley T1D Program aims to support studies that aim to understand and/or therapeutically emulate natural protection from T1D. Of specific interest are research plans that include understanding genetic protection from T1D; understanding maternal protection from T1D; understanding other examples of natural protection from T1D that are amenable to scientific study; and developing or validating preclinical or clinical therapies to prevent or delay T1D that mimic aspects of natural protection.
Proposed activities may include, but are not limited to, collecting, analyzing, and generating or testing hypotheses using human samples; preclinical or clinical activities that advance or build evidence for a specific therapeutic concept based on existing knowledge of protection; and establishing new patient cohorts to collect samples required to understand a form of natural protection. Any proposed animal studies must be required, strongly based on human-based evidence, and, ideally, entwined with parallel studies using human samples.
The proposed funding term can be up to three years. Laboratory-based studies are typically supported with a total budget of up to $300,000 per year. Clinic-based studies are usually supported with total funding of up to $400,000 per year but can be higher. Establishing new cohorts of individuals: requested funding amounts can range based on activities but should not exceed $3 million over three years.
Selected applicants will be invited to submit a full grant proposal due June 1, 2022.
