Ann Dunham Soetoro was an independent thinker who used Applied Anthropology to analyze situations and develop creative solutions. She energetically applied what she learned and partnered with others to bring about lasting positive change in Indonesia.

On March 1 friends and family came together to celebrate Ann's life and launch a fundraising campaign to create the Ann Dunham Soetoro Endowment. Guests were greeted with a musical performance by the students and community members who make up the UH Mānoa Gamelan Ensemble.

Ibu Roosman's Indonesian cuisine was the perfect fit for the animated, multicultural conversations that took place. Kapiolani CC's culinary program staff and students did a wonderful job serving the flavorful food.

In 2007, his brother and sister established an award to be given in Dr. Volt H. Tom's name to a graduating medical student who has shown the most commitment to Geriatric Medicine during his or her years at the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM). This year Mee Lin Tom and Tenny Hoon Tom's generous gift was placed in an endowed account ensuring that their brother's story will continue to inspire others for many years to come.

During the program, guests learned more about the vision for the fund and were inspired by the impact private support can make in building a better future for the U.S. and communities around the world.
