For more than a century, the University of Hawaiʻi has worked hard to make higher education accessible to all. Whether through one of the seven community college campuses or one of the three four-year campuses, UH is expanding its efforts to attract the most promising students, regardless of their financial circumstances.

As college costs continue to rise, the amount of private support for students must as well. Gifts to scholarships and student aid help us to retain our best and brightest and to provide access to a life-changing higher education experience for our students.

Over several decades the Loui family, led by Bernice, built their educational legacy for this state through their generous investments in the University of Hawaiʻi.

A Tale of Two Women

This is the story of two young girls, born seventy years apart, in different parts of the world, to families of different races. Raised in rural surroundings, each nurtured the dream of getting an education and traveling far from home. They never met, yet their lives became permanently intertwined when the first Kay Ikeda Kaneshima Endowed Excellence Scholarship in Japanese Studies was awarded to Rachel Hazeltine in 2011-2012.

Kathleen Jaycox

Kathleen Jaycox enjoyed a 41 year career as an educator, helping students help themselves. Before her retirement in 2010, she served as a community college administrator in both Illinois and Hawai'i.
